I have spent my whole life staring up at clouds and assuming they were basically weightless cotton balls floating around for my personal enjoyment. They are not. They are enormous, heavy, electrically charged science experiments hanging over your head, and a few of them are genuinely terrifying. Did you know an ordinary cloud weighs about as much as 100 elephants?
That puffy, harmless-looking cumulus cloud drifting over your backyard is hiding a ridiculous secret: it weighs around 1.1 million pounds. Scientists worked this out by measuring the water density inside a typical cloud — roughly half a gram of water per cubic meter — and multiplying it by the cloud’s enormous volume. That comes out to about 500 metric tons of water, or the weight of roughly 100 elephants, just hanging there in the air. The reason it doesn’t crash down on you is that the water is spread across billions of droplets so tiny they fall slower than the warm air pushing up underneath them. So technically there’s a herd of elephants over your head right now. Sleep tight.
Did you know there’s a cloud that only forms at the edge of space — and glows electric blue?
Most clouds top out around six or seven miles up. But there’s a rare, ghostly kind called a noctilucent cloud that forms about 50 miles above the ground, near the boundary of outer space, where it’s so cold and dry that scientists barely understand how clouds can exist there at all. They’re made of incredibly tiny ice crystals, and you can only see them in deep twilight, when the sun has dropped below the horizon for you but is still lighting them up from below — making them glow a soft, electric blue against a dark sky. They were first noticed in 1885, and slightly unsettlingly, sightings have been increasing over the decades, which researchers think may be tied to changes high up in the atmosphere.
Did you know clouds have official Latin names, like animals do?
It turns out clouds aren’t just “the big fluffy ones” and “the rainy gray ones” — there’s a formal naming system, and we owe it to an amateur. In 1802, an English pharmacist named Luke Howard proposed classifying clouds in Latin, the same way scientists name plants and animals: cumulus (“heaped”), stratus (“layered”), cirrus (“curl of hair”), and nimbus (“rain”). The system was so good that meteorologists still use it more than 200 years later, mixing and matching the terms — so a cumulonimbus is literally a “heaped rain cloud,” which is exactly what a thunderstorm is. A guy whose actual job was selling medicine gave us the entire vocabulary of the sky, and we just kept it.
Did you know one cloud can hold enough electricity to power a small town — for a moment?
The tall, anvil-topped thunderclouds called cumulonimbus are basically giant batteries in the sky. As ice crystals and water droplets churn around inside them, they rub together and separate electric charge, stacking up positive charge near the top and negative charge near the bottom until the difference becomes staggering — a single lightning bolt can carry around one billion volts. The air inside a single big storm cloud can hold the energy equivalent of a small town’s electricity use, all of it built up and discharged in flashes that last a few thousandths of a second. The next time you wait out a thunderstorm, remember you’re sitting under one of the most powerful natural generators on the planet.

For decades people kept photographing an eerie, churning, wave-like cloud that looked like the underside of a stormy ocean turned upside down — lumpy, rolling pouches of gray that seemed almost too dramatic to be real. In 2017, after years of debate, the World Meteorological Organization made it official and added “asperitas” (Latin for “roughness”) to the international cloud atlas — the first brand-new cloud type added in over half a century. What makes it remarkable is that an ordinary cloud-watching group, the Cloud Appreciation Society, pushed for years to get it recognized. So somewhere out there, regular people who just really love clouds successfully lobbied science into naming a new one. Honestly, good for them.
