I figured I had the planets down from grade school: eight balls of rock and gas, spinning politely around the sun, Earth in the comfy middle. Then I started actually reading about them. One planet’s day is longer than its year. Another one spins on its side like it got knocked over. There’s a storm out there older than the United States and wide enough to swallow our entire planet. The neighborhood is so much weirder than the poster on the classroom wall.


1. On Venus, a single day is longer than its entire year.

Venus is the slowest-spinning planet in the solar system — it takes about 243 Earth days to turn once on its axis. But it whips around the sun in only about 225 Earth days. So if you somehow stood on Venus, your birthday would arrive before sunset. The day literally outlasts the year. And just to be extra weird about it, Venus spins backwards compared to almost every other planet, so the sun would rise in the west and set in the east. I read that paragraph four times and it still doesn’t sit right in my brain.

2. Venus is hotter than Mercury — even though Mercury is way closer to the sun.

Common sense says the closest planet to the sun should be the hottest. Common sense loses this round. Mercury hits about 800°F on its sunny side, but Venus sits at a roasting 870°F all over, day and night, top to bottom. The difference is Venus’s thick blanket of carbon-dioxide atmosphere, which traps heat in the most extreme greenhouse effect in the solar system. Mercury has almost no atmosphere to hold heat in, so its night side actually plunges to around -290°F. Venus never gets a break. It’s the hottest planet in the family, and it’s not even in first place for the front-row seat.

3. Saturn is so light it would float in water — if you could find a big enough bathtub.

Saturn is a giant — about 760 Earths would fit inside it — but it’s made mostly of hydrogen and helium, the two lightest elements there are. That makes its average density less than water’s. So if you had an ocean large enough to drop Saturn into, the planet would bob right on top like a cosmic beach ball. It’s the only planet in the solar system that would do this. Picture a thing nine times wider than Earth floating in your kitchen sink. The universe has a sense of humor.

4. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is a storm that’s been raging for centuries — and Earth could fit inside it.

The Great Red Spot is a hurricane-like storm on Jupiter that astronomers have been watching since at least the 1600s. That’s not a typo — this single storm has been spinning for over 350 years, possibly much longer, with winds clocking in around 400 miles per hour. And it’s enormous. For most of recorded observation it was wide enough to drop our entire planet inside with room to spare. (It’s been shrinking in recent decades, which has scientists genuinely puzzled, but it’s still one of the largest storms known to exist anywhere.) A storm older than your country. Sit with that.

5. Uranus orbits the sun lying completely on its side.

Every other planet spins like a top, more or less upright as it circles the sun. Uranus rolls around the sun like a ball, tipped over at about 98 degrees — its poles point nearly straight at the sun instead of up and down. Scientists think something massive, maybe an Earth-sized object, smacked into it long ago and knocked it flat. The result is the strangest seasons in the solar system: each pole gets about 42 years of continuous sunlight, followed by 42 years of total darkness. Imagine a sunrise you wait four decades for.

6. It may literally rain diamonds on Neptune and Uranus.

This one sounds like something a kid would make up, but scientists take it seriously. Deep inside Neptune and Uranus, crushing pressure and intense heat are thought to squeeze carbon atoms in their atmospheres into solid diamonds, which then sink downward like a slow, sparkling hailstorm toward the planet’s core. Lab experiments here on Earth have actually managed to recreate the conditions and produce tiny diamonds, backing up the idea. Somewhere out there, it is raining gemstones, and nobody is around to collect them. The richest weather in the solar system, completely wasted.

7. The tallest mountain in the solar system is on Mars, and it dwarfs Mount Everest.

Meet Olympus Mons, a massive shield volcano on Mars standing roughly 13.6 miles tall — about two and a half times the height of Mount Everest measured from sea level. Its base is so wide, around 370 miles across, that it would blanket the entire state of Arizona. If you were standing on top of it, the volcano would be so broad and the curve of Mars so gentle that you couldn’t even tell you were on a mountain — the slopes would disappear over the horizon in every direction. The biggest mountain we know of, and you wouldn’t be able to see it from its own summit.

8. Mercury has ice — on the planet closest to the sun.

You’d assume the planet hugging the sun would be the last place to find frozen water. But Mercury barely tilts on its axis, which means the floors of certain deep craters near its poles never, ever see sunlight. Tucked in that permanent shadow, NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft confirmed deposits of water ice sitting just a few feet from some of the most blistering surface temperatures in the solar system. Scorching daylight and ancient ice on the same little planet. The solar system refuses to keep things simple.

9. Jupiter has been quietly racking up moons — it’s well past 90 of them.

When I was a kid, the textbook gave Jupiter a tidy handful of moons. As telescopes and spacecraft got better, the count kept climbing — and as of the latest tallies, astronomers have confirmed more than 90 moons orbiting Jupiter, with Saturn neck-and-neck and sometimes ahead in the moon-count race. Some of these are giants in their own right: Jupiter’s moon Ganymede is actually larger than the planet Mercury. So one of Jupiter’s moons could pass for a planet if it were out on its own. The gas giants aren’t planets so much as tiny solar systems with a paint job.

10. There’s a planet so far away we’ve only flown past it once — and a “ninth planet” we’ve never even seen.

Neptune is so distant that it takes about 165 Earth years to make a single trip around the sun. It was discovered in 1846, which means it only completed its first full orbit since discovery back in 2011 — one Neptunian year took our entire history of knowing it existed. Only one spacecraft, Voyager 2, has ever visited, zipping past in 1989. And it gets stranger out there: some astronomers suspect an unseen “Planet Nine” may be lurking in the far dark of the solar system, tugging on distant icy objects with its gravity. We’ve never laid eyes on it. After all our maps and missions, our own backyard might still be hiding a whole planet.
